How to Calculate Running Pace

Time divided by distance — and what the clock is not

Running pace is elapsed time divided by distance, usually written as minutes and seconds per kilometer or mile. This tutorial walks through that ratio, a 5 km / 25 min worked example, and dials that drive a pace clock plus even-split preview. Pace is a training arithmetic, not a fitness prescription or medical advice.

Pace is time per unit distance, not a training plan, race prediction, or medical advice. Even splits assume constant speed. Talk to a qualified clinician before starting or changing an exercise program.

1.What pace is

Pace is how long each unit of distance takes: minutes per kilometer or per mile. Speed is the reciprocal — distance per hour. Coaches quote pace because it maps cleanly onto lap splits. It is not a VO₂ estimate, a heart-rate zone, or medical advice. Walkers and runners use the same ratio; only the numbers change.

2.The formula

Convert elapsed time to minutes: t = 60h + m + s/60. Then pace = t / d, where d is distance in km (metric) or miles (US). The calculator writes that decimal as mm:ss per unit. Speed is d / (t/60) in km/h or mph. The unit switch relabels distance; it does not convert a 5 km run into 5 miles. Enter a positive distance and a positive time.

\[ \mathrm{pace} = t / d,\quad \mathrm{speed} = d / (t/60) \]

3.Worked example

Take 5 km in 0 hours, 25 minutes, 0 seconds — the same defaults as the pace calculator. Total time t = 25 min. Pace = 25 / 5 = 5 min/km, written 5:00 / km. Speed = 5 / (25/60) = 12 km/h. Even kilometer splits at that pace are 5:00, 10:00, 15:00, 20:00, and 25:00. In US units the same 5 and 25 yield 5:00 / mi and 12 mph — a different course, not a converted 5 km.

\[ \mathrm{pace}=25/5=5\ \mathrm{min/km} \]

4.Pace clock and splits

Move the distance and time dials to see pace update on the clock and along the split line. The hand marks minutes and seconds per unit; the course ticks are even splits at constant speed.
