How to Convert Units
Multiply by a factor so unwanted labels cancel
Unit conversion restates the same physical quantity with a different label. For length and mass you hop through a shared base, or you write conversion factors as fractions so units cancel like algebra. This tutorial walks through that factor-label method, a 12 inch → centimeter → meter ladder, and a playground that strikes the canceled labels as you change the amount.

Linear families (length, mass, area) use a constant factor. Temperature is not a single multiplier: Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin also differ by an offset. This playground teaches the factor-label ladder for length, not °C/°F.
1.What a conversion factor is
A conversion factor is a fraction equal to 1, because the numerator and denominator name the same length in two systems — 2.54 cm and 1 in are the same distance. Multiplying by 1 does not change the quantity, only the written unit. Chain as many factors as you need so every unwanted label appears once on top and once on the bottom and cancels.
2.The formula
The Unit Converter scales through a shared base: x_to = x_from × (f_from / f_to), where f is the factor from that unit into the base (meters for length). That is the same arithmetic as writing inches → centimeters → meters as stacked fractions. Temperature is the exception: you cannot convert °C to °F with one factor, because the zero points differ.

3.Worked example
Convert 12 inches to meters by going inches → cm → m. Write 12 in × (2.54 cm / 1 in) × (1 m / 100 cm). The inch labels cancel, then the centimeter labels cancel, leaving meters: 12 × 2.54 / 100 = 0.3048 m — exactly one foot. The converter’s meter–foot pair is the same identity in reverse: 1 m = 3.28084 ft.
