How it works

Unit conversion expresses the same physical quantity in a different measuring system. Most families use proportional factors; temperature uses offset-and-scale relationships.

For length and mass, convert to a shared base unit, then scale to the target unit.

Temperature scales are related by linear transforms. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin differ by both slope and offset.

Kelvin is Celsius shifted by absolute zero.

\[ K = ^{\circ}\!C + 273.15 \]

Worked example

Length: 1 meter = 3.28084 feet (scale through meters as the base). Temperature is not a single factor: 0 °C = 32 °F = 273.15 K using the offset formulas in How it works.

Why is temperature different from length?

Length and mass conversions are proportional. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin differ by slope and offset, so you cannot multiply by one constant the way you convert meters to feet.
