This free final grade calculator answers the question students actually type the week before exams: what do I need on my final to get the grade I want? Enter the average you already have, the course grade you are aiming for, and how much the final is worth as a percent of the class. The output is the minimum exam score, not a letter and not a GPA.
No account is required. How it works beside the form rearranges a weighted average: needed on final = (goal − current × (1 − w)) / w, with w as the final's share written as a decimal. The default fields — an 82 now, a 90 goal, a 30% final — match a common syllabus. If the number comes out above 100, that A is not available from this exam alone.
What is a final grade calculator?
A final grade calculator (also called a final exam grade calculator) solves for one unknown: the score on the remaining weighted assessment that lifts your current grade to a target. It needs three percents: current grade (everything already in the book, with the final still empty), goal grade (the course mark you want), and final exam weight (the share of the whole course, not of leftover work). It does not average your homework list; build that current number first with the Grade Calculator if the syllabus splits assignments, quizzes, and a midterm.
How to calculate what you need on the final
Write the final's weight as a decimal w (30% → 0.30). The rest of the course already counts as (1 − w). The exam must cover the gap between your goal G and what that rest already contributes: F = (G − C(1 − w)) / w. With the defaults, C = 82, G = 90, w = 0.30, so the finished work is worth 82 × 0.70 = 57.4 points of the course. You still need 90 − 57.4 = 32.6 points from a 30-point exam, which is 32.6 / 0.30 ≈ 108.7%. Use the same identity for any other trio of percents; do not mix letters and percents in one pass unless you have already mapped the letter to a number.
How to use this final grade needed calculator
Current grade is the weighted average of work that is already scored — leave the final out. Goal grade is the course percent you want (90 for many A−/A cutoffs; check the syllabus). Final weight (%) is copied from the grading breakdown, for example 25 or 40, not "the rest of the semester" unless that rest is exactly one exam. All three fields are percents. Needed on final updates as you type. What if I need more than 100% on the final?
The default 82 → 90 with a 30% final needs about 108.7%. No ordinary exam goes that high, so the goal is unattainable unless the instructor adds extra credit, drops a low test, or curves the scale. A linear curve between two ranges is the Grade Curve Calculator. Otherwise lower the goal until Needed on final is at or under 100 — for this weighting, an 85 course grade needs (85 − 57.4) / 0.30 = 92%, which is harsh but possible. A result below zero means the goal is already locked in even with a zero on the exam.
Overall class grade after you take the final
Once you have an exam score F, the course percent is the reverse weighted average: overall = C(1 − w) + F·w. This calculator does not run that direction. After the test, put every category — including the final — into the Grade Calculator and read the weighted class grade. Do not average the current grade and the exam 50/50 unless the final was actually worth half the course.
Final exam score vs semester GPA
The number on this page is a percent in one class. A semester GPA is several courses, each converted to grade points and weighted by credit hours. Worked example: 108.7% needed on a 30% final
You sit at 82% with the final still ungraded. You want 90% in the course. The syllabus gives the final 30%, so the work already done is 70% of the mark: 82 × 0.70 = 57.4. The exam must supply the remaining 32.6 points of a 100-point course, and 32.6 / 0.30 is 108.7%. That is above any usual 100-point test, so a 90 is not available from this final alone. Drop the goal to 85 and the same arithmetic gives 92% on the exam — still steep, but inside the scale.

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Convert the final's course weight to a decimal w, then compute (goal − current × (1 − w)) / w. That is how to calculate the grade needed on a final; this calculator does it from the three percent fields.
What grade do I need on my final to get an A?
Set Goal grade to the percent your syllabus calls an A — often 90 or 93, sometimes 94. Leave Current grade as the average without the final, and Final weight as the exam's share of the course. The result is the exam percent, not the letter A itself.
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
The target is out of reach on this weighting. Ask whether extra credit, a dropped test, or a curve applies, or lower the goal until Needed on final is at most 100. The default 82 / 90 / 30% example is already in that over-100 case.
Can I enter letter grades instead of percents?
Not on this form. Map the letter to the percent your course uses (for example B+ → 87), then type that number. For credit-weighted letters across a term, use the Semester GPA Calculator.
Does my current grade include the final?
No. Current grade should be everything already scored. LMS portals sometimes show a running average that ignores empty categories; that is the figure to paste here. If you already have a final score, this page is the wrong direction — add the exam as a weighted row on the Grade Calculator.
Is final weight a percent of leftover work?
Use the percent of the whole course printed on the syllabus (final = 25% of the class), not "whatever is left this month." If two assessments remain, either combine their weights into one remaining block or switch to the Points Needed Calculator for a running point total.
