This free semester GPA calculator turns one college term into a credit-weighted grade point average on a 4.0 GPA scale. Name each course, pick credit hours, and enter letter grades or grade points. No account is required. How it works beside the form states the identity GPA = Σ(gᵢcᵢ) / Σcᵢ — total quality points divided by total credits. The result is a semester GPA, not a running transcript.
What is GPA? Grade point average meaning
Grade point average (GPA) is a 0–4.0 summary of course work: each class contributes quality points equal to grade points times credit hours, and the GPA is that total divided by credits attempted. A heavier credit load moves the average more than a light one with the same letter. The Grade Calculator uses the same weighted-average idea for scores and category weights inside one course. The figure is not a transcript; registrars still apply repeats, withdrawals, and pass/fail rules this widget does not.
GPA scale and letter-to-points converter
The chart lists Grade, Percentage, and Grade points. The default 4.0 GPA scale is a common US map: A and A+ are both 4.0, A− is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, then down to F at 0. Schools differ on plus/minus values and on whether A+ is 4.0 or 4.3, so edit any cell or add a letter. This calculator has no 4.3 column; A+ stays 4.0, and grade points in the chart cannot go above 4.0. Changing a row updates the Letter menu from those entries.
How to calculate semester GPA with credits
How to calculate GPA for a semester: convert each letter to points on the 4.0 GPA scale, multiply by that course's credit hours, add the quality points, and divide by total credits. If every class carries the same credit hours, the weights cancel and you are left with a simple average of the grade points. Zero-credit rows do not belong in the denominator.
How to use this GPA calculator
Choose the course count or tap Add course, then name the rows if you want labels. Toggle Enter grades as Letter or Grade points. Letters read their values from the GPA scale; grade-point fields are numbers from 0 to 4.0. Set credit hours on each row. If a grade is above 4.0, the form shows a warning and does not report a GPA — this tool stays on an unweighted 4.0 scale.
Weighted vs unweighted GPA
Unweighted college GPA maps letters onto 0–4.0. Some high-school scales add extra points for Honors or AP work, which can push a reported average above 4.0. This GPA calculator does not switch high-school and college modes and does not add +0.5 or +1.0 for those labels. If your school uses extra weight, apply that rule on paper — do not type 4.5 or 5.0 into a grade-point field here.
Semester GPA vs cumulative GPA
Semester GPA is one term. Cumulative GPA folds every attempted term together: add all quality points, then divide by all credits (or weight each term GPA by that term's credits). Worked example: a 3.63 semester GPA
The default term is a 3-credit A (4.0), a 4-credit B+ (3.3), and a 3-credit A− (3.7). Quality points are 4.0 × 3 = 12, 3.3 × 4 = 13.2, and 3.7 × 3 = 11.1, which sum to 36.3. Credits sum to 10, so the semester GPA is 36.3 / 10 = 3.63.

What does GPA stand for?
GPA stands for grade point average. In US college grading it is usually a credit-weighted mean of course grades on a 4.0 scale.
What is a good GPA?
It depends on the school and the program. Many colleges treat about 3.0 as a B average and 3.5 as strong, but honors, scholarships, and graduate admissions set their own bars. This tool reports the semester GPA; it does not rank whether that number is good.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Add quality points from every term and divide by all credits attempted — not the average of semester GPAs unless those terms had equal credits. This calculator covers one semester. Use the GPA Planning Calculator when you need the GPA still required on remaining credits.
Can I enter letter grades instead of points?
Yes. Switch Enter grades as to Letter. Each menu choice reads Grade points from the editable GPA scale (Grade, Percentage, Grade points). Switch to Grade points when you already know the numeric value.
Why can't a grade be above 4.0?
This is an unweighted 4.0-scale GPA calculator. Grade-point inputs, scale rows, and the resulting GPA are capped at 4.0; going higher shows an on-page warning. A+ is 4.0 here, not 4.3. Extra AP or Honors weight is not added automatically.

This semester GPA is unofficial. Match the letter-to-points map, credit rules, and rounding your registrar publishes before you rely on the number.
