Weighted grade

This free grade calculator turns one class into a weighted average from named assignments, quizzes, midterms, and exams. Add a row for each syllabus item, type a name, then enter the score and the weight that item carries. The result is a weighted class grade — the usual course mark when homework and a final exam do not count equally.

No account is required. How it works beside the form states the identity Grade = Σ(scoreᵢ × weightᵢ) / Σ weightᵢ. Names do not enter the math. A weight of zero is skipped. The figure is a class grade, not a transcript GPA.

What is a weighted grade?

A weighted grade is a class average in which each assignment, test, or exam is multiplied by the share the syllabus gives it, then those products are divided by the total of the weights. A 20% quiz cannot move the mark as far as a 40% midterm with the same score. An unweighted mean treats every row as equal. This page computes the weighted form used for most high-school and university course grades.

How to calculate a weighted grade

How to calculate a weighted grade: list each component's score and its weight, multiply pair by pair, add the products, and divide by the sum of the weights. If the weights are percents that already add to 100, dividing by 100 is the same as using that sum. University modules that publish a mark and a credit (or percent) weight use the same identity. Zero-weight rows do not belong in the denominator.

How to use this grade calculator

Tap Add score for another assignment, exam, or lab, then fill Name, Score, and Weight. Rename the defaults (Assignment 1, Assignment 2, Midterm exam) to match the syllabus. Remove drops a row; at least one must remain. Scores and weights can be percents or any matching scale — 90 with weight 40 is the same ratio as 0.90 with weight 0.40. The weighted grade updates as you type.

Weighted vs unweighted class grades

Unweighted class grades are a simple average: add the scores and divide by how many there are. That is the weighted formula with every weight equal (or every weight left at the same number). Weighted class grades follow the syllabus shares. This calculator does not guess missing weights and does not convert a percent into a letter. If two rows should count the same, give them the same weight.

Class grade vs semester GPA

This grade calculator is one course: scores and category weights. A semester GPA is several courses: letter grades (or grade points) times credit hours. For a credit-weighted term on a 4.0 scale, use the Semester GPA Calculator. The average still needed on remaining credits is the GPA Planning Calculator. The How to Calculate GPA tutorial uses the same weighted-mean idea with quality points instead of assignment scores.

What grade do I need on the final?

This widget reports the weighted average of the rows you enter; it does not back-solve one exam. For the score still required on a final with a known weight, use Final Grade Needed. For points on the next assessment toward a goal percent, use the Points Needed Calculator. A linear map from one scale to another is the Grade Curve Calculator.

Worked example: an 85.5 weighted grade

The default class is Assignment 1 at 90 with weight 40, Assignment 2 at 80 with weight 30, and a midterm exam at 85 with weight 30. The products are 90 × 40 = 3,600, 80 × 30 = 2,400, and 85 × 30 = 2,550, which sum to 8,550. Weights sum to 100, so the weighted grade is 8,550 / 100 = 85.5.

\[ G=\frac{90\cdot 40+80\cdot 30+85\cdot 30}{40+30+30}=\frac{8550}{100}=85.5 \]

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each score by its weight, add those products, and divide by the total weight. That is how to calculate a weighted grade for a class; this calculator does it from the named rows you enter.

Is this a GPA calculator?

It uses the same weighted-average idea as GPA (value × weight over total weight), but you name each component and enter its score and weight rather than letter grades and credits. For credit-weighted GPA, use the Semester GPA Calculator or the How to Calculate GPA tutorial. For the GPA still needed on remaining credits, use the GPA Planning Calculator.

Do my weights have to add up to 100?

No. The denominator is the sum of the weights you entered, so 40, 30, and 30 works, and so do credits such as 3, 3, and 4. Percents that already add to 100 are convenient but not required. A weight of zero is skipped.

How do I find an unweighted average?

Give every row the same weight (for example 1, or 100 split equally) or enter the same number in each Weight field. The weighted formula then reduces to a simple mean of the scores.

What grade do I need on my final exam?

This page does not solve for a missing exam. Put the work you already have into the rows, then open Final Grade Needed with your current grade, the course goal, and the final's weight.

Can I add more assignments or exams?

Yes. Use Add score for another named row, up to twenty. Remove deletes a row you no longer need. At least one score-and-weight pair must stay.
